Many companies, however, don’t seem to have as solid a grasp of the concept.

Over the last decade the term “empowerment” has become widely used, and leaders at all levels have been challenged to do more of it. And that, I believe, is part of the problem. The ambiguity of the buzzword is likely to send some leaders down the wrong path and invite outright rejection from others. (When it’s tossed around with no explication, it can sound off-putting and trendy.)

From my point of view, the term does not improve communication or clarify what you need to do to “empower” others. You may have noticed in the description above that empowering includes two practices that have been on the list of managerial success factors for decades; delegating and informing. Labeling these core managerial practices “empowerment” does not appear to add any real value and only contributes to distracting and misleading observations like, “You can’t empower other people, they can only empower themselves.”
